Choosing Your First Padel Bat
By SMASH UK Team
Padel bats are solid — no strings, no tension — so shape, weight and core material do all the work that tension and string bed would do in tennis or badminton.
Shape comes in three types: round (biggest sweet spot, most forgiving, best for beginners), teardrop (a balance of control and power for improving players), and diamond (smallest sweet spot, most power, aimed at advanced players with consistent technique).
Core density is usually soft, medium or hard. Soft cores give more control and are kinder on the arm; hard cores give more power but transmit more shock, which matters if you already get elbow or wrist niggles.
Weight typically sits between 350-375g. Lighter bats are easier to maneuver for quick volleys at the net; heavier bats carry more power into smashes but tire your arm faster over a long match.
If it's your first bat, a round-shaped, medium-core bat around 360g is the easiest starting point — forgiving enough to build confidence while you get used to the walls and glass.
