So what classifies a player as advanced? Typically, an advanced player will be high club level player, county or national player. Players of this calibre will have very strong fundamentals and wide array of shots. They are able to transition between hard and soft touches during fast rallies and also possess excellent court coverage.
Advanced players generally have a more specific requirements and a better option will be to demo a racket. This is because small changes in balance or weight will have big impact on the player's control and feel. Additionally, there are extra features that top players would require in their frames such as high tension capability or even unique grip sizes.
Players at this level are generally very strong and able to handle a stiff to extra stiff racket as it would maximise their accuracy. The balance point of the racket will depend on the style of game (attacking, defensive or all-round) and also the events they play – singles, doubles or mixed doubles.
Singles player generally tend to suit head heavy frames as they have more time to generate bigger swings and utilise the racket’s balance even more. Doubles is more speed intensive and players would generally prefer a more versatile racket (even balanced or head light) to keep up during rallies. Rear court players might opt for a head heavy balance while front court players might suit a head-light balance as they would need to quickly intercept shots.
Weight is another key factor with most advanced player preferring 3U(85-89g) and 4U(80-84g) as they are strong enough to maximise speed and power. There are many premium frames in the market but the top brands that sponsor the world’s best players are - Yonex , Victor and Li-Ning. Each of these brands have incorporated their own unique technology in their frames and provide a very different playing experience.
The price point for premium frames start from about £140 and the really top end rackets are around £180-£210. For Yonex premium frames the Pro models are designed for advanced players. Li-Ning rackets follow the code system and advanced players can consider rackets that are number 700 and above.
